Even though it’s the older model, thats still a whole lot of kit for not a lot of money!

Classifieds system overhauled

After numerous problems with the previous classifieds system, we have taken the step to remove the old system entirely and replace it with an entirely new system.

Unfortunately this has meant that the previous adverts have gone, though most of them were out of date anyway.  User accounts that were made for the old system are still in place and can be used to post right away into the new system, so get posting those adverts.

Random as a box of frogs

We have just had about the most random sale you could think of…

The conversation went something like this:

  • Customer: Hi there, i need a snare..
  • Us: We have many *gesture at snare wall*
  • Us: What are you looking for, metal, wood, any particular sound?
  • Customer: Well, the sound doesnt really matter.
  • Us: Uhm, ok…..
  • Customer: My partner is going to make a cabinet out of it and replace the skins with wood inlayed with a cat tattoo…
  • Us: Ooook!

So, basically this guy’s girlfriend is Rosie Brown, an artist who makes some excellent bespoke cabinets and furniture with intricate inlaid designs from wood.  The snare is going to have both skins replaced with one of her wooden designs.

As the snare is to be made into a cabinet instead of played, we half expected just a non-descript basic snare to be used, but no the customer suprised us yet again and went for a £340 Jimmy Degrasso Pearl signature model, in gold finish.  Not often we get someone spending almost £350 on a snare and not even hitting it with a stick first!

Here is the snare he took away:

We’ve given the customer a card with our details on, and asked him to send us a picture of the snare when it’s finished, so we’ll make another post when we get that through.

In the mean time, if you want to look at some more of Rosie’s work you can do so by clicking here.

Off to pastures new

We’re sad to see the departure of Harry Whatton, one of the Drum Centre members of staff.  Harry has been with us for about 3 years now, and although he loves a bit of drumming and percussion his heart (and his degree) were always in the more arty side of things.  Harry has been lucky enough to get a job as a painter of fine art, so we know he’s going to love it.  We wish him all the best, and look forward to him dropping in for a coffee whenever he is in the area!

Ye olde Newcastle Drum Centre team

Ye olde Newcastle Drum Centre team

Good morrow fine people, we have foundeth archived photographs from the very first day of opening of ye Newcastle Drum Centre back in 1892 on a cold and blustery winter morn..

As ye can see, here be the team resplendent in all their glory, with top hats and firm stern poses as all gentlemen should comport themselves when having their photographs recorded for posterity.

Thou canst clicketh on the image to see it enlarged through whichcraft to display larger on your television set.

In the image you see:

  • Top left: Sir Graham of Robson
  • Top right: Daniel Ward Esquire
  • Botom left: Lord Harold Watton
  • Bottom right: Duke Banjamin Alldred III

The descendant of one of these fine fellows, Ben Alldred of the current Drum Centre staff is playing fine tunes and melodies this Sunday with his band Thea, purveyors of the finest in groove metal.  If thou findeth thineself in the area of the Ouseburn this coming Sunday the 31st Of January in the year of our Lord 2010 then thou shouldst parktake of fine bevarages in the Tyne bar and hear Ben and his band thrashing out from 8pm onwards.

Meanwhile the Drum Centre is running along nicely, and we should have more updates for you later in the week with new kit from the Namm show, so tune in frequently!

It's squealy good!

It’s been a long two months since we said goodbye to our last Pork Pie Little Squealer kit and now they’re back and better than ever. This time in stunning blood red sparkle high gloss lacquer which you really can see your face in! Classic pro quality chrome fittings with isolated rims mounts complete the sexy looks, as you can see below;

The sound – huge. Supplied with coated single ply heads the toms still manage to deliver a pre-EQ’d beef and resonance that sounds like it’s been through a recording studio already. Thin all maple shells and razor sharp bearing edges (the best in the business we’re told) like this are very hard to find on a kit of this price.

We all want one, would owning three drum kits be too much i have to ask myself?

A fond farewell

Recently we’ve been the happy recipients of a Drum Art snare drum, beautifully made using stave block construction and a Pandouk shell. Before we tell you any more about it, lets get to what you really want and show you a few photos of it:

As with everything we get in store, we like to give it a bit of a test run so we can be confident of what we are saying when talking to customers if they have any questions about something they want to buy. With the Drumart snare we gave it to Guy to put through it’s paces and report back on, and he had this to say:

“Having tried it out I can safely say that I’ve never experienced a drum with such a wide dynamic range. Although it was made with classical music in mind, it’s warm lows and crisp highs make it perfect for rock music and it reminiscent of classic 70s Ludwig and Gretsch snares. At over an inch thick the unusual shell really gives this snare quite some beef!”

We’re sad to see this test model go back to the supplier, but we really did enjoy having the chance to give it a try out while it was in the store. Thanks have to go to Pete at Proel for the loan of the snare and we’re happy to report that all Drum Art snares are now available to order with prices on application via Newcastle Drum Centre. Take a look at the Drum Art site and draw yourself up a wish list.
