Dame Evelyn Glennie visits us at NDC!

If you don't know who Dame Evelyn Glennie is, then I'll tell you! As the first person to ever create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, Dame Evelyn has won countless awards and performs continuously with various orchestras and other ensembles. You may have seen her performing at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic games! What's even more amazing is, she has been profoundly deaf from the age of 12!

She has also collaborated with musicians such as Bjork, Bobby McFerrin and Steve Hackett of Genesis, and is often commissioned to write percussion parts for composers.

Aside from performing, Dame Evelyn is involved with charities such as the Royal National Children's Foundation, and works as a motivational speaker.

We were delighted when Dame Evelyn popped in to check out or store, while she was in town performing 2 shows at Newcastle Dance City with dancer Joss Arnott. She decided to take away some Stagg Sensa cymbals (particularly the sizzle chinas), to add to her ever growing collection of instruments (she has over 2000!!!).

As you can tell by the photo, I was a little star struck, having been a fan of Evelyn's since I was kid!
